Your Instagram is not growing: six causes and what to do

You post and nothing happens. The real causes, in order, and what changes when the goal stops being follower count.

Before the causes, an uncomfortable clarification: for a hotel, growing followers is not the goal. Ten thousand followers from another city who will never travel are worth less than five hundred who will. What matters is reach among new people in your market, and messages received.

1. You post the hotel, not the destination

The algorithm shows you to people who do not follow you only if the content is interesting on its own. A photo of your room does not interest a stranger; the sunset on your beach does. Practical rule: seven out of ten posts about the place, three about the hotel.

The first second decides whether they stay.

2. The first two seconds say nothing

Reels are decided in the first second. If it starts with your logo, a transition or a generic shot, people leave. Start with the most striking thing: the water, the view, the food, someone’s face.

3. You post inconsistently

Three posts this week and none for the next two is worse than one a week, always. Consistency matters more than volume.

Replying within the first hour is a signal too.

4. You do not reply

Comments and messages in the first hour are a signal for the algorithm, and for the person who asked. An account that does not reply stops receiving questions.

And destination content is what brings new people.

5. The profile does not convert

Someone watches your reel, opens the profile and finds a vague bio, no city, no price, no WhatsApp button and highlights from two years ago. You lost them there, not in the content. The bio should say in one line what you are, where you are and what to do.

6. You expect results in a month

A hotel account takes three to six months of consistent work to send clear signals. If you change strategy every three weeks, you never leave square one.

The four numbers that actually matter for a hotel.

What to look at instead

  • Reach from non-followers (new people).
  • Saves and shares (content people use to plan a trip).
  • Link taps and messages started from the profile (real intent).
  • Attributed bookings, by asking “how did you find us?” and writing it down.

What to do in the next four weeks

  1. Week 1: fix the profile. Bio with what you are, where you are and what to do; WhatsApp link; highlights for rooms, how to get there, prices and reviews.
  2. Week 2: shoot a full day with the shot list. Leave with a month of material.
  3. Week 3: post four times with the 7/3 ratio and reply to everything within the hour.
  4. Week 4: check the four numbers, keep the format that brought the most new reach and repeat it.

When to advertise instead of pushing harder

If your content already produces saves and messages but reaches few people, ads multiply it. If your content produces nothing organically, advertising it just gets more people to ignore it, at a cost. Fix the message first, then buy reach.

What actually grows followers worth having

Collaborations with destination accounts, real guest content (with permission and tags), replying in the comments of local accounts and appearing in local listings. All of that brings followers who intend to travel, the only ones that matter.
