My hotel does not show on Google Maps: causes and fixes

The seven reasons a listing does not appear on the map and how to fix each one, in order of importance.

3 min read

“I search for my hotel and it does not show up” is the most common complaint we get about Google. It is almost always one of these seven causes, and six of them cost nothing to fix.

A verified listing, right category and the pin on the real entrance.

1. The listing is not verified

Unverified, the listing exists but competes at a disadvantage. Verification can be by video, postcard or phone depending on the case. It is step one and there is no shortcut.

2. The category is wrong

A wrong category takes you out of searches you should appear in. A hotel listed as “lodging” does not compete for “hotels in Santa Marta”. Check the primary one and add the secondary ones that apply.

3. There are duplicate listings

Two listings for the same business split the reviews and neither ranks. It happens when someone created a listing years ago or an employee made their own. Claim the duplicate and request a merge.

4. Your details do not match across the web

If your site says “Calle 19 #3-45”, Facebook says “Cl 19 No 3 45” and TripAdvisor says something else, Google hesitates. Name, address and phone must be written identically everywhere. It is tedious and it is half of local SEO.

An active listing posts; an abandoned one loses ground.

5. The listing is incomplete

With no hours, no attributes, no description and three photos, Google has nothing to show. Complete listings appear more often and get more clicks. Filling everything in takes an afternoon.

6. You are far from the centre of the search

Distance is the one factor you do not control. If your hotel is 40 minutes from the centre, you will not rank for “hotel in the centre”. What you can win is your own area: put the name of the district or village in your description and in your website content.

Recent, answered reviews: what moves the needle over time.

7. Few reviews, or reviews left unanswered

Prominence counts. A hotel with 200 recent, answered reviews appears before one with 12 from two years ago. Answering all of them and asking systematically is what moves the needle over time.

What if someone else claimed your listing

It happens more than you would think: a former agency, a partner or someone unrelated holds control. Google has an ownership request process: you request access, the current owner has a week to respond and, if they do not, you can claim it with business documents. Have your registration, tax ID and photos of the signage ready.

The real check is in the listing stats.

How long changes take to show

Category, hours and photo changes show within days. Ranking improvements from reviews and data consistency take one to three months. If someone promises first place in two weeks, they are selling smoke.

A ten-minute checklist

  1. Is the listing verified?
  2. Is the primary category exactly what you are?
  3. Does the pin land on the real entrance?
  4. Are name, address and phone written identically on your site, socials and directories?
  5. Are there more than 20 photos, with at least one from this month?
  6. Are all reviews answered?
  7. Any posts in the last two weeks?
  8. Do your hours include holidays?

Fail three or more and the problem is not Google: it is the listing.
