Santa Marta is not one destination: the Rodadero guest is not the Palomino guest, and Taganga is not Guachaca. Selling the same way in all four areas is the fastest way to spend on ads without filling rooms.
Each area competes on something different
- Rodadero: families and groups, deciding on price and location. Whoever replies first with a clear price wins.
- Taganga: young travellers, diving and international backpackers. English, reviews and map presence matter here.
- Palomino and Guachaca: nature, disconnection, couples. Destination content wins: river, sierra, empty beach.
- Historic centre: short stays, people passing through, high volume of “near me” searches.
The order worth investing in
- A complete Google listing. It is free and it is where “hotel in Santa Marta near me” happens. Without it, ads pay for work the listing would do on its own.
- Fast WhatsApp replies. In high season, whoever answers in minutes keeps the booking.
- Destination content. Not of the hotel: of the place. That is what makes someone choose to come.
- Ads. Once the above works, they multiply it. Before that, they only speed up the problem.
- Your own website with prices. To stop depending on commissions.
The calendar that rules
Demand in Santa Marta moves in sharp seasons: December–January, Easter, mid-year and long weekends. Ads go live four to six weeks before, not during. And in low season you do not switch everything off: you keep destination content running, because that is what feeds the next season.
What costs the most money in the city
Depending only on OTAs. Commission takes 15 % to 25 % of every booking; the same money in your own channel buys guests who come back.
Not asking for reviews. In a destination where everyone has a pool and air conditioning, the rating is the tie-breaker.
Old photos. Guests compare the photo with reality and write about it in the review.
Your real competition is not the hotel next door
In Santa Marta your direct competition is the OTA charging you commission and short-term rentals. Against the OTA you compete with a direct channel and relationships; against informal rentals you compete with what they cannot offer: reception, security, breakfast, a booking confirmed in writing.
That is why the content that converts best here is not the prettiest room: it is the one that shows service, because that is the difference the guest is paying for.
English: half the market almost nobody serves
In Taganga, Palomino and the centre a significant share of travellers are foreign. Having your Google listing, your saved replies and at least your rooms page in English opens a market most hotels skip. You do not need to translate everything: the ten most frequent answers and the website are enough to start.
Three expensive local mistakes
- Promising a beach you cannot see. If the beach is ten minutes away, say so: guests find out anyway and write it in the review.
- Not explaining how to get there. In Guachaca, Palomino or Minca, logistics are half the purchase decision.
- Living off high season. The business is defined by how May and September go, not January.
